Indian Reservation Files Suit (5/29/2012)

The Oglala Sioux Tribe filed a $500 million lawsuit against some of the world’s largest beer makers, distributors, and four beer stores in the reservation border town of Whiteclay, Nebraska.  In addition to wanting the judge to restrict sales in Whiteclay, the lawsuit asks that breweries, retailers and distributors pay damages for health-care and law enforcement costs, developmental problems in children and other alcohol-related problems on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (a reservation with 40,000 people that spans an area about the size of Connecticut and has officially banned alcohol).  In support of several motions asking for dismissal of this lawsuit, an attorney for State Line Liquor in Whiteclay, stated the tribe “is seeking an order from this court that would actually command retail defendants to refuse the sale of their otherwise publicly available goods to members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe who live on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation based solely on their race and ethnicity.”

Patrol Blues to Aid the City (5/18/2012)

This conference is no stranger to violence after the events that unfolded in 1999 in Seattle at the World Trade Organization negotiations. Chicago is on high alert with Chicago Police Chief Garry McCarthy stating his strategy on protestors is to “extract those who need to be extracted.” For the most part, protestors are peaceful, but it only takes a few participators who seek to escalate a situation into extreme chaos for the sheer enjoyment of destruction and havoc. There is always risk of terrorism whenever world leaders gather, but the City is in the mindset of hoping for the best, yet preparing for the worst. And many officials have learned from previous World events and have been preparing police officers for these types of situations that call for a mentality of more crowd control and less clashes between protestors and police. Chief McCarthy said that the police will only use their riot gear if they have to, but the important thing to remember is that those officers are there to maintain a peaceful demonstration and “removing those who are not going to be content with just holding a sign.” A fear shared by officers and protestors is the threat that the group the “Blackbloc” poses to this weekend’s demonstrations. Their sole purpose is to increase mayhem and destruction while hiding behind masks completely dressed in black.  The mask obscures the identity of the individual and is used theoretically to promote unity. The Blackbloc seek to resist police while symbolically destroying as much property as possible and to provoke attack (either against those in uniform or civilian) thereby greatly endangering the lives of everyone around them.
